Action headings

People who visit the Local Offer are probably trying to do something.

They might just want reassurance that what they have heard elsewhere is right. They might just be browsing to see what they can find.

If they do want to do something, action headings work well. Start with a verb if you can.

Examples:

Apply for 30 hours free childcare

Have your say

Apply for free school transport

Find your local SENDIAS support worker

Identify and assess your child's needs

These last two could be a problem. What does "Find" mean? Why are we hiding our SENDIAS team? But if you are in a large local authority, there might be different areas. And there might be a postcode input to find out which one the child lives in.

Then, who does the "Identity and assess"? It's maybe not the parent who is looking at the Local Offer.

So here's an interesting thought. Parents actually apply for childcare on the GOV.UK site, where this heading would be appropriate.

Do or Doing? Have or Having?

Use an -ing verb on the Local Offer if you are giving information and then directing people to another site:

Applying for 30 hours free childcare

Or, if the feedback form is on another page, for example on the main council website:

Having your say

This pattern is becoming standard, and people will begin to understand that the direct form of the verb means "this is where I do the thing I want to do".
