What are links

Links are the whole basis of the world wide web. They are references to another page or document. Links take you somewhere.

It's important that the user knows where the link goes, and why they would want to follow the link.

There are two kinds of links:

• text link
• image links

In both cases people who can see the web page get all sorts of visual clues about links through the written context or the image.

In this video you can see

• the Independent living link (with underline on hover)
• the 11-16 years link (no change on hover)
• the image County Durham (which links to the Home page)
• a text link to useful SEND information for parents and carers

Pages like the one above are "navigation pages". Some users of assistive technology might get the computer to read all the links from a page. If you can see the page, it's clear that there are different sections - age, topic and general information paragraphs. Without seeing the page the list of links is very, very long. The page above has 72 links!
